Meet J65! What an unexpected joy it was to see this little head pop up next to mom J35 Tahlequah yesterday off the rocks at Lime Kiln.

J-Pod came into Haro Strait yesterday afternoon and while I missed seeing the first group going north, the others stalled out to west side shuffle a bit. I took up a perch on my favorite rocks below the Lime Kiln Lighthouse to see what would transpire, happy just to be seeing blows in the distance. I never would have predicted a close pass from the J35s and J41s that included a brand new baby!

The Center for Whale Research was able to get on scene and confirm the new calf who looked to be just a few days old. They issued an announcement this morning giving the calf its designation, confirming the mom as J35, and sharing that via their drone footage they were able to sex the calf as male.

Welcome, little one. May we share many more passes at Lime Kiln together in the years ahead!
