Class overview:

Join us for an all-ages art course where we’ll begin by learning the basics of drawing orcas and then progress into drawing specific individuals over the course of four weeks. During each of our hour-long sessions we will provide brief tutorials, followed by ample time drawing orcas through a step-by-step, repetitive process. We will share simple tips and tricks to understanding orca anatomy (body parts) and introduce the methods researchers use to tell individuals apart from one another. Sessions build on one another, resulting in a series of progressive sketches and two “final” drawings of individual orcas from both the Southern Resident population and the Bigg’s killer whale population. All you need is a drawing utensil, some paper, and the willingness to learn.

No special art skills are required.

Class fee is per household, so your whole family is welcome to join in!

Testimonials:

Student Testimonials for other Whale U classes:

"Whale University is an incredible opportunity for citizen scientists at any experience level. You will gain access to and learn from leaders in the field while building valuable community with your classmates (who love whales just as much as you do). You can participate as much as you like, sharing is encouraged but not forced, and the courses are designed to inspire open discussion."

"This class helped me find significant joy within my life. It was my first experience with others who are passionate about the same thing I am! It felt like a real community which was a pleasant surprise. This class gave me the opportunity to determine which routes within this field really interested me, as well as gave me the confidence to pursue those things fully! I am so incredibly thankful that I found OBI, and I plan on taking classes through this organization for the foreseeable figure to continue to expand my knowledge!"

"To say this experience was life changing is an understatement! Not only did I grow immensely during this course, I also had the absolute privilege of watching my classmates advance as well. Monika has built this amazing curriculum to educate and encourage citizen scientists to contribute to our community."

FAQ:

What does "all ages" mean?

That truly anyone is welcome to participate! While we are gearing these sessions towards youth ages 5-12, anyone who wants to spend an hour each week drawing orcas and learning ID basics is welcome to join.

What supplies will I need?

All you need is paper and any drawing tool or art supplies of your choice. Pens, pencils, markers, crayons, paints - anything goes!

Do I have to register my family members separately?

Nope! The class fee covers tuition for your whole household, so you and your kid(s) are all welcome to participate together.

Is it possible to get additional sticker sheets?

While one sticker sheet is included in your class fee and will be mailed to you, additional sticker sheets will be available in our online store by the end of October and you can purchase additional sets there.
