Marine Mammals 101

Class overview:

If you are newer to learning about marine mammals, this is the class is for you. Over the course of 6 weeks you will get introductory lectures from experts on the species frequent the Salish Sea: Southern Resident and Bigg’s killer whales, humpback whales, gray whales, minke whales, porpoises, and seals and sea lions. This is a perfect way to start your journey towards a deeper appreciation for the species we share our marine environment with.

Included in the class:

Six ~75 minute virtual sessions with lectures on regional marine mammal species including time for Q&A with the speakers

MEETING DATES AND TIMES

Classes are held on Zoom at 6:30 to 7:45 PM PST on the following Thursdays in 2025:

October 1 - Southern Resident killer whales with Amanda Colbert

October 8 - Bigg's killer whales with Monika Wieland Shields

October 15 - Harbor seals, sea lions, and elephant seals with Amanda Colbert

October 22 - Minke whales, porpoises, and Pacific white-sided dolphins with Monika Wieland Shields

October 29 - Gray whales with Cindy Hansen

November 5 - Humpback Whales with Erin Gless

Prerequsites:

This is an introductory level class for those who are new to learning about marine mammals of the Salish Sea, so no previous knowledge is necessary! All we ask is that you bring your attention and willingness to learn.
