Researcher-led half-day tours: OBI & Maya's Legacy

This summer we are pleased to partner with Maya's Legacy Whale Watching from Friday Harbor to offer you a unique opportunity to head out on the water with Monika Wieland Shields from the Orca Behavior Institute! Learn firsthand about OBI's research, see data collection in action, and find out how you can participate in regional community science efforts.
These limited-date excursions in July 2026 combine Maya's Legacy's signature 4-hour whale and wildlife tour with the opportunity for more in-depth discussions. Conversations can be catered to the interests of the group, but potential topics include a deeper look at comparisons between Bigg's and Southern Resident killer whales; how community members can contribute important data to research projects related to orcas, humpback whales, marine birds, and other regional wildlife; and a behind the scenes look at OBI's current research projects both in the Salish Sea and abroad.
If you want to see whales and become more involved with conservation efforts, this is the tour for you. A portion of the proceeds from each trip are donated to the Orca Behavior Institute. Book seats directly through Maya's Legacy.
