December 2020
Happy New Year to all! With the calendar flipping over to 2021, we've got our final 2020 monthly map to share with you from December.
The image doesn't quite do justice to the total number of sightings this time since many reports were clustered in the same locations (particularly SW of Victoria and in the middle of the west side of San Juan Island, where the sightings dots are right on top of each other).
The Southern Residents were present for at least half the month, but likely more than that as they often can go undetected this time of year in the northern Strait of Georgia. Bigg's killer whales were reported on a whopping 27 days of the month, making it a record December for their presence! One notable event was a group of 10 whales spending 10 consecutive days in Hood Canal.
We'll take a closer look at annual sightings and share some other visuals in the coming days, but in the meantime, a huge thank you to our intrepid volunteer Tomis Filipovic who works with us to create these maps each month!
